Some bug in a program which should have terminated. That's really
 embarrasing.

∂15-OCT-74 1133 ACT,REG
JMG is eating up the computer, the disk, the UDP and the dart tapes, and
he's doing it without even being here.

He started a job thru a PTY just before midnight and it's gobbled 7 hours
of CPU time, it's written more than 130 data files, and every one of those
files has to get dumped, bloating the dart tapes and history files.
It's nearly noon, and that job is still running. And what was that claim
about only using up time at night when no one else....

Besides the problem of dialing up the other computer in the first
place (what if TTY11 is busy, etc.), there is the further problem
that there is no File Transfer Protocol for such connections, so I
would have to know, for each such system, how to log in and enter
a mail command, how to interpret its responses (there are standard
FTP response codes for various error conditions), and any
timing idiosyncracies regarding typeahead and so on. If you were
to persuade them to establish a dial-up FTP server, then maybe.

If you are not already acquainted with their EARTHLAB project, I
think you will find this interesting and amusing reading. They
have acquired 38,000 acres of land near San Luis Obispo for their
first city of 50k inhabitants. They seem to have a reasonably
 large resource base available.

The file SOFTER[FOO,DBA] is a postscript to the Software discussion begun
by SOFT. If you comment on it within the next day or so I could alter it
in response. Basically I think that while the technical issues are
interesting, the management issues are more pressing, and the time has come
for a serious attempt at a coherent policy for future facilities at the lab.
